Project Background

In January 2025, FATech received a request from Northern Mechanical Manufacturing Joint Stock Company (name withheld at the client’s request)—a manufacturing company with 350 employees and three factories in Hanoi and Hung Yen.

The client’s challenges:

  • 200 office computers that had been in use for 5–7 years and frequently malfunctioned
  • No standardized configuration — each machine had different software installations
  • The IT team consisted of only 2 people, unable to meet support demands
  • No centralized device management system
  • Strict deadline: must be completed before the start of the new fiscal year (April 1, 2025)

FATech’s Proposed Solution

After evaluation, we propose the following solution package:

Hardware: 200 Dell OptiPlex 7020 workstations (Core i5-14500, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD) + 50 Dell 24" monitors to replace the old ones

Software & Management:

  • OS Standardization: Windows 11 Pro + Office 2021 LTSC
  • Deploy Microsoft Intune for centralized device management
  • Set up Windows Autopilot for automated installation
  • Integrate with the customer’s existing Azure Active Directory

21-Day Plan

Week 1: Preparation (7 days)

  • Days 1–2: Kickoff meeting, detailed survey of each department, mapping device locations
  • Days 3–4: Receive shipment, perform physical inspection of 200 devices, register Autopilot profiles
  • Days 5–7: Set up Intune policies, test the golden image on 10 pilot devices

Week 2: Phase 1 Deployment (7 days)

  • Replace the first 100 devices (Hanoi office)
  • Deployment schedule: 15–20 devices/day, work after hours to avoid disrupting operations
  • Personal data migration: Automated using USMT (User State Migration Tool)
  • Deployment team: 4 FATech engineers + 1 client liaison

Week 3: Phase 2 Deployment + Finalization (7 days)

  • Replace the remaining 100 devices (Hung Yen)
  • Recover old devices and process data in accordance with regulations
  • Train the client’s IT team on Intune and new operational procedures
  • Hand over documentation and conduct acceptance testing

Achievements

Metric Before After
Average boot time 3 minutes 20 seconds 28 seconds
Hardware incidents/week ~15 tickets 0 tickets
New device setup time 4–6 hours 45 minutes (Autopilot)
IT staff time spent on helpdesk 70% 30%

Customer Feedback: "We’ve never had employees complain so little about their computers. Our IT team now has time to focus on tasks that are truly more valuable." — IT Director.

Key Takeaways

  1. Autopilot + Intune is an extremely effective combination for large-scale deployments
  2. Detailed planning by department and day is key to meeting deadlines
  3. A client liaison is crucial — helps resolve access issues and handle after-hours work
  4. Data migration often takes longer than expected — always include a 20% buffer
